The Mark of Eden - Ennistymon Courthouse Gallery - 2013

My latest exhibition, The Mark of Eden, opened on Friday night in the Red Couch Space in the Ennistymon Courthouse Gallery.

It's a really nice space and I was so delighted to finally see all the work together, framed and hanging.
Thanks to everyone who came along. Here's a sample of the work. Each piece is oil on board and measures 15cm x 15cm unframed.  The exhibition will continue until the end of October.

Powerful stuff...where do we fit in society

These paintings developed from my research into newspaper photographs.

Through observation we build up an impression of how we should behave and where we fit in the power structures of society. The self is not absolute or fixed but is constructed over time through the repetition of visuals and words.

Wallpaper fit for a nun...

I just finished this piece called "Mark of Eden II". It measures 15cm x 15cm, oil on board.. The floral design is inspired by a photograph I took of wallpaper in a bedroom of an old convent which reminded me of the garden of eden.

The core of the problem: Ode to an apple

It's all about Eve and of course apples. The apple has such a voluptuous contour and an unmistakable fragrance, that it is surely one of the most sensuous fruits.

I love the skin, whether that of a deep red faultless euro-standard apple, or a pretty stripy one with natural blemishes, it is so full of colour and such a complete contrast to the flesh. The core of an apple is wonderful too with its secret cavities and layers protecting the seeds of the next generation.

Even as apples start to decay, I still find them irresistible, giving freely of their changing fragrance and morphing endlessly into weird new colours and shapes.
